mamu
Mamu is a project conceived by Pública to paint macromurals in Brazilian favelas. The first edition of mamu was carried out in July 2018 at Cruzeirinho community, in Alto Vera Cruz, a favela of the East Region of the City of Belo Horizonte that is acknowledged by a strong hip-hop and samba culture. Cosmic Boys, a duo formed by artists Zeh Palito (State of São Paulo) and Rimon Guimarães (State of Paraná), painted a macromural with 38 houses during a whole month. The artists also had the assistance of six painters from the community. The locals took great part in this edition of the project by taking on several tasks for the team. They were both providers and protagonists on the project decisions, such as the choice of the teachers and subjects for the workshops.
This project is pioneer in Brazil. An innovative methodology of work was adopted: hiring the greatest part of the project team – average 70% – of locals.

After a four-year gap, project mamu returned to Belo Horizonte, this time at Vila Nova Cachoeirinha, a community that is part of Lagoinha territory. The guest artist for this edition was Criola, who painted a macromural of 42 blocks, in addition to the blocks of the community. The project also offered more workshops. Four free workshops were delivered for different audiences: sewing, entrepreneurship in communities, graffiti, and a dance called passinho. The project celebrated the delivery of the work of art with a party at the community court, which the locals produced and took part in.

The third edition of MAMU was carried out in June 2024 at Morro do Papagaio, in the City of Belo Horizonte. The venue was chosen due to the overwhelming view, in addition to its diversity and cultural richness. The festival invited artist Kika Carvalho to conceive the macromural, with the collaboration of professionals from the community. The inspiration for the art came from the series “Brasões” [Coat of Arms], where Kika owns the image of a kite to allude to the crests of the families that came from Africa. A party was organized at the community sports court to commemorate the delivery of the work of art, with the presence of the locals..
