[2017 edition] Sapucaí Street, Downtown - Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais | Brazil

CURA’s second edition was a milestone in the love relationship between the festival and the City of Belo Horizonte. This extra edition celebrated the capital of Minas Gerais’ 120 years. This edition delivered two gable murals to the city, one painted by Argentinian artist Milu Correch and the other by one of the most important names of graffiti in Minas Gerais: DMS. In addition to the paintings, CURA carried out six days of partying in Sapucaí Observation Deck with lots of music. The last day was a celebration for the city’s anniversary when the illumination of the six gable murals painted up to then took place (four in the first edition and two in the second one).

[2018 edition] Sapucaí Street, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais | Brazil

CURA’s third edition tried to celebrate every aesthetic of the urban art, mainly calligraphy, which was the founding art of graffiti. The diversity of artists was the high point of this edition. Three gable murals were painted by: Argentinian Hyuro, a great representative of the contemporary mural art; Criola, from Minas Gerais; and Comum, also from Minas Gerais, who used a technique that is very dear to street art: stencil. The fourth gable mural, called Letras [Letters], is composed by the work of 21 graffiti writers from Belo Horizonte. In addition to the collection of giant murals, CURA brought to the festival some important debates, such as the risk of urban gentrification through art and the invisibilization of Black artists. This edition also celebrated the 10th anniversary of Pdf Crew, a group known for their talent on 3D graffiti. The closing party staged a historic concert by FBC and Djonga, which created an engagement with the hip-hop scene that blossomed right next door of Sapucaí Observation Deck, at Santa Tereza Viaduct. An edition to be remembered by every lover of urban art.

[2019 edition] Diamantina Street, Lagoinha - Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais | Brazil

A special edition that took place where culture was born in Belo Horizonte: Lagoinha Neighborhood. Urban art here was a tool to discuss territory and imagine new futures. This edition wanted to be a bridge between the two parts of the neighborhood that is cut through by Antônio Carlos Avenue. At Lagoinha, the festival created an art observation deck at Diamantina Street and delivered four paintings in gables and seven in walls, created mostly by local artists and from other neighborhoods of Belo Horizonte. Adding to the art legacy, CURA Lagoinha also featured ten days of activities with round tables to debate the many layers of such a rich territory, as well as concerts, a street food fair with cooks from the surroundings, some side activities in spaces around, and many encounters.

[2020 edition] Sapucaí Street, Downtown - Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais | Brazil

CURA’s fifth edition featured the “see you soon” of the festival at Sapucaí Street. Over these four years of history, the street has gone from seldom visited to becoming a touristic point of the city, as well as one of the most vibrant places, with many bars, restaurants, and parties. The urban art observation deck gained four more gables, and the collection now has 14 giant murals. An edition with its particularities during the coronavirus pandemics. The festival owned its name in Portuguese — CURA means cure, healing — and, in a year that was marked by disease, wanted to talk about cure. The festival had two invited curators for the first time: artists Arissana Pataxó, and Domitila de Paulo. Four gable murals were painted, one by an indigenous artist, the greatest contemporary public piece of art until then; and two installations were created, one signed by Jaider Esbell, which was originally conceived for CURA and then took part in several biennials and museums exhibitions, and other manifesto-installations created by five artists. In addition to the works, CURA promoted more than 15 hours of on-line activities. This edition had no in-person encounters, no activities on the streets, but delivered more-than-special pieces of public art that were visited by thousands of people.

[2021 edition] Raul Soares Square, Downtown - Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais | Brazil

This was the first edition at Raulzona, that is how the festival tenderly refers to Raul Soares Square, the new space of public art immersion in Belo Horizonte. Here the viewer is at the center, they see the works and is seen by them. This edition was conceptually defined by the journey performed by the festival, from the Sapucaí Street Observation Deck until Raulzona. The avenue that connects these two territories of Belo Horizonte is Avenue Amazonas [Amazon], and it was by looking at that great river, which is like a great road that begins in Peru and goes all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, next to Marajó Island, that the curators conceived this edition and invited the artists. The signs from the Marajoara People drawn in Portuguese pavement tiles on the floor of Raul Soares Square and the many symbols and layers of that square also guided the artistic journey of CURA’s sixth edition. At the gable mural located right in Amazonas Avenue, we had the painting by Coletivo Mahku, from people Huni Kuin, from the State of Acre, in the Amazonian territory.

Surrounding the square, still in Amazonas Avenue, a giant kenê was painted on the asphalt by indigenous artists Shipibo, from Peru, Sadith Silvano and Ronin Koshi; at the center of the square, Tainá Marajoara facilitated a great collective healing ritual. CURA went Transamazonian entirely and presented a very beautiful edition that also featured two gable murals by two giants of urban art: Edmun and Mag Magrela, along with an installation by Grupo Giramundo, who celebrated their 50th anniversary that year.

This was the last edition produced by Pública. This edition was a coproduction by Pública and Água, a company that belongs to the other two creators of the festival and that now undertakes the management and execution of CURA. Jana Macruz, Ju Flores, and Pri Amoni continue to act as art directors of the festival.
